Colonel Ciiaffey as referee, and .Ue.srs - -(.v. Sbarplin and E. H. James as hi-Ws. gave entire satisfaction. '-* i_ P proceedings were inaugurated by _ MX-rotind bout between R. Mayze t aiJst 51b; and P. Chick (lOst Sib). '* Botn aopcared to rely upon the effect ~4~ of short blows, and in this manner the ' pair exchanged a good deal of well- * directed effort. In the third round ' ' -\iavVc. forcing the pace and boxing r'everlv. endeavoured to closo the case lor tho prosecution, but Chick was not to be denied, and several of his swinging rights found billets. He, however, -/ faded away very quickly, and at an - early period of his decline the bout was'declared a win for Mayze. The first round of the novice competition produced a lively pair of youngsters mlv. Wilson (8-t 12_lb) and it. .'.. Young (~st 71b), who, after the manner ■of their kind, lost no timo iv prclimi- \ Ba ry pirouettes, but settled down at once to serious business. Young was knocked down, and Wilson, in his over- * eagerness, inadvertently hit his oppo--5 • nent a$ he was scrambling to his feet, the match being awarded to Young on a foul. .. - C. T. Gundry (Sst 9.1b) and C. H. /■■_ Young (9st 71b) next appeared. Gundry • was more scientific in his methods, his > .lever footwork saving him much pun-•-i<hmcnt projected in his direction. .. Young, however, stood up to his task - gamely, but his opponent won on ' - points. Another six-round bout was next -staged, between A. Thomson (9st 81b) w d C. H. Blackler (9st 41b). Both 1 ' men had the samo stylo, and for som*> considerable timo the pair indicated = . that they were out for defence and not " defiance. Eventually one of th;-:ii \ struck a blow more in sorrow than in •anger. In the second round Blackler, who pat in some particularly neat foot- - „.rk, implanted a straight left on Thomson**- jaw;- Thomson nodded his '" acknowledgments pleasantly, and sub.equently returned the compliment with hearty goodwill. In the third round, '- in-a short bout of in-fighting, Thorn,* son was knocked out of time. , ' -In tho novice semi-final K. Wilson . 'met A. Parker. "In tho second round Wilson was dazed by a swinging blow ' on the nock, but rallied sufficiently to ~ 'finish the round. Elliott (Bst 81b), of Timaru, «-" Australasian champion, arid A. Rox1' hlirgh (Bst 121b); Victorian champion. "" - Both displayed a nice "-free style, El- !"" liot'r. nimble footwork being the sub- ,"**- ject of general admiration. From the r second round onwards both had fro--; '? : iment recourse to leaning exercise. ;". Elliott scored most conspicuously durl ing the earlier part of the proceedings, •"■ but Roxburgh was ipore in evidence to- -.. .ards the finish. Both finished gamely, -", and the match was declared a draw.
