THE DRAINAGE BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR OF ''-__ PBESS." .- ■;'; Sir,—ln your T iss_e of May 20th, in your report of the meeting of tho above Board, Mr W. Jl Walter moved, in accordance with notice of motion, that certain drains in the Avon Drainage District be improved, tho cost charged to the Riccarton district. Mr S. A. Staples' strongly opposed th© proposal as the most audacious ever made to a public body! The facts in dispute are that the Drainage Board have about 14 feet artificial waterway, besides -overal feet of natural wator-co-ti-e draining a large area of the Riccarton district into the Avon district, and has only provided 11 foot. artificial • and natural waterway to drain th© large area of tho Avon district, which would be __ffi_ient for the drainage of th© Avon district, or at least that part that is affected by the flooding of th© Riccarton water. It will b© remembered that a Avon district farmer sued the Drainage Board for daanagos caused by the action of the Drainage Board bringing the water into th© Avon district and not providing sufficient outlet; that action ending in the farmer 1 - favouT cost the Board over £500. .. If there wer© no Drainage Board th© Rkwarton district would have to.find an outlet for its own drainage, at al great cost. -Hence Mt Walter's motion. It is to b© hoped there are not many lrcm-bera on the local bodies of the rv-wr-inion of Mr 8 A. Staples' idea of fair play.—Yours, etc., PAPANUI.
