KAIKOURA NOTES.
(special to "thk pbess.")
KAIKOURA, May 7.
Since Tuesday heavy westerly weather, with heavy rain yesterday, has prevailed. A tremendous eea is tumbling into North Bay to-day, washing clean over into Lyell Creek at the west end of the township, and causing the residents considerable anxiety.
The motor launch Fleetwing (once the well-known Lyttelton yacht) was washed on the rocks near the now wharf site on Tuesday afternoon, and smashed to pieces. Last night the coaches from Cheviot and Blenheim did not arrive, the delay being due to the flooded state of the rivers.
Owing to the storm the new wharf works are undergoing a severe test. Mr S. Binney has purchased at Waimate an eight-man manual fire engino for presentation to the township, provided tho residents find the heso, etc. An enthusiastic meeting was held at Ha.puku last night to discuss the proposed re-establishment of a co-oper-ative dairy factory for the benefit of the residents of that locality. A Government dairy expert was piesent. It was resolved , that steps be taken to form a co-operative dairy factory company for the purpose of establishing a butter factory at Hapuku, and a committee was formed to draft ft prospectus and obtain a list,,of suppliers with tho likely number of''cows.
Matters are in progress in connection with tho making of arrangements for a stock boat. The canvassers are meeting with success, and it is expected there will be a guarantee of 150,000 sheep for next season.
