WAIMATE HIGH SCHOOL CADETS.
PRESENTATION OF "WEEKLY PRESS" MEDALS.
At Waimato yesterday in the grounds of the High School, the Cadets (numbering fifty) assembled under the command of Lieutenants Lauxg and Foweraker, Captain. Goldstono being absent on holiday with tho Dominion bowling team. *m> muster was held for tho purpose of handing to the winners the medals presented by "The Weekly Precs" to the Waimato Cadets in honour of their having won "The Wretkly Press" challenge Shield for the South Island for two years in succession. Tho weather was bright, and tho school grounds presented an animated scene. Besides the scholars there were present a few of the general public, and Sir William and Lady Steward, Mr N. Francis, Mayor-elect, tho Rev. G. Barclay, chairman of the Waimate High School Board, ,Mr Hamilton, member of the South Canterbury Board ot Education and act-ing-chairmaai of tiie Waimate School Committee, Mr Pitcaithley, headmaster, and the teaching staff. Sir William Steward congratulated the corps, the school, and the ehooting team on their success in winning the splondid ehield for tho first two years that it was offered for canurotkioai. Hβ hoped the corps would furnish a team in the coming yearo to again: be successful. Sir William spoke of the present times of peace, but said that trouble might arise at any time, and it was well to have the youth of the Dominion trained to discipline and to the use of arms.
Mx N. Francis, Major-elect, joined in congratulating the successful team, and hoped the Waimate school might always tura out such a good corps, aJid that tho corps might continue to produce such a good team of shooters. Mr Francis said tho members of tho corps and tho people of Waimate, should highly appreciate the offer of the splendid challenge ehicld for competition, and tho very generous gifts of medals to tho successful team.
Lady Steward then presented the medals, fastening them on the breasts of the winners.
Tho successful cadets in the first year's competition were:—Sergeants W. Coltmau and 11. Baxter, ColourSergeant Cameron, Corporals Barclay, Colbourno and Hyland. and Cadets A. Smith, J. Hayman, H. Nicholas, and A. Bell. In the second year:—Serjeants Coltman and Cameron, Colourfcorgeant -Hurst, Corporal Hyland, and Cadete Baxter, Nicholas, Barclay, Smith, Williams, and Coltman. Tho Rev. G. Barclay congratulated thb officers and members of the corps, and tho winning team.' and exhorted them to practice not only shooting and drill, but industry and attention to their scholastic duties; and tho cultivation of good character through life. Mr Hamilton expressed his pleasure at being present on this occasion, and at tho success of the Cadets.
Cheers was called for, and heartily given, for Lady Steward and Sir William Steward, for their presence and kindness, for the Christchurch Press Company, and for Mr Francis, the Rev. G. Barclay, Mr Hamilton, and; Mr Pitcaithley and his school staff.
