TRAMS AT RAILWAY CROSSINGS.

COMPLAINTS REGARDING

BELAYS.

Complaints as to the -way in which trams are hold up at tho Lincoln road and Colombo street-railway crossings while shunting operations aro in progress were made at tho meeting of the Christehurch Tramway Board last night.

Mr D. Syk«s quoted recent instances where, he stated, tie Addington tram was most seriously delayed- oh this account, and other traffic was allowed to pass while tho car was kept waiting. It seemed to him that the Addington crossing-keeper was instructed from Chriatchurch to hold up a car. The matter was a serious one, and the attention of the Railway Department should certainly be calkd to It. The Chairman (Mr A. W. Beavon) said tihtut the Board had repeatedly called the attention of the Department to the matter, both in regard to the Addington crossing and tho Sydenham crossing. Mr S. A. Staples said that strong representations should be made to the Department. Only that evening an Addington car was delayed l for nearly twelve minutes at the railway crossing

Mr W. Roeco said that the cars wero frequently stopped when the shunting operations did not warrant it,' the epgino engaged in th© shunting work not crossing the road. It seemed to him preposterous that that sort of thing should be allowed. When a shunting engine was not going to cross the road, some signal should be given the motorman to come on. Only the other day he saw care delayed for several minutes at the Colombo street crossing. The engine did not cross the street, and the delay was altogether to no purpose. Mr Sykes moved that the attention of the Minister for Railways should be called to the unnecessary delay that occurred at tho crossings. The motion was seconded by Mt Staples. Mr C. M. Gray suggested that the traffic manager should be written to, because the matter would be referred to him by the Minister. -\ t Mr Wood' (tramway ' traffic superintendent) : Wo write to him every week on tho samp matter, but we can get no satisfaction from him. Mr Recce: Then we must go further. If the traffic manager here will not attend to our representations, we shall have to go to headquarters. Mr Wood: Last week they delayed a car on the Riccarton road fifteen minutes while shunting.

Tho motion was then put and carried.
