THE FUNERAL.
The profound respect felt for the lafce Mr Geo. G. Stead by all olasses of the community was shown by tho large and representative attendance of citizens at his funeral, which took place yesterday afternoon. There were present representatives of the many important commercial enterpriues with which the late Mr Stead had been so inrtimately coninectod, members of the different sports bodies and clubs to which he belonged, representatives of tho different iocal bodies and other organisations- with which' he had been associated directly or indirectly, and a host of private friends trom all parts of the district brought together by a common fellowship of sorrow at tho loss of man.
From the day the sad news was announced of the death of Mr Stead, the family have been in receipt of almost innumerable messages of condolence and sympathy from official, political, sporting, and other circles not only in flew Zealand but in the States of Australia and beyond, and tliose tokens of tbe widespread grief felt at the sad event were followed by the receipt ol : many beautiful wreaths sent by sorrowing friends, by commercial and local government organisations, and by the different jockey clubs oi Australia and New Zealand. The coffin •was covered and surrounded with, the floral tributes sent, and a second open hearse, heavily laden, carried to tho grave the wreathe which, could not be placed on the first. The funeral cortege, over a mile in length, and containing moro than ono hundred vehicles, left Strowan Park at two o'clock, and proceeded along the Papanui road and" street to Peterborough street and KUinoro street, and then on by the River road to the Mile road, and on to the Linwood Cemetery whero tho interment took place. To tho graveside many ■wont direct, and the impressive burial service was conducted by tho Key. C. H. Gossett in the presence of a great concourse of mourners. Messrs Edgar and Gerald Stead (sons of tho lato Mr Stead), Mr Russell Grace (son-in-law), Mr Geo. Palmer. Mr R. M. Hyman, manager of the Lyttelton Times Company, and has written to the family expressing; hifi deep regret at being unable to attend the funeral.
