Not for many years has tlio contest for tho Mayoralty of Wellington excited so much iuterest as that which was decided to-day. Tho sitting Mayor, tho Hon. T. W. Hislop, and an exMayor, Mr J. G. W. Aitkon, M.P. for Wellington E:ist, ivero early in tho Hold, nnd conducted a vigorous campaign for five weeks. The polling today was very heavy, and the streets w«re crowded to-night with people anxious to know tho result. The total shows that 14,812 rotes were cast, as compared with 80C0 last year.
