On Jiiswr Monday, however, while attending the Can.t*rbury Jockey Club's autiuna meeting, he was taken suddenly ill after the conclusion of tlw race for the ChMnjpagn© Stakes, which was won by Golden Slipper, a fillT from his stable. Medical assistance was procured, and Mr Stead was taken home, and it was then found that he was suffering from an acute attack of Bright's disease, brought on by a chill contracted during the day. x'or some days the patient's condition though serious,, was not and his chances of recovery, seemed very favourable. On, Tuesday might, however, lie took a tuxn for tho worse, and Dr. Palmer, his medical attendant, stayed with him tho whole night. Early yesterday morning tho seemed a little* better. The improvement was maintained through the day, and by tlie afternoon h« was better and. brighter than he had been since his attack. That condition wna followed, however, by a sudden leeling of faintness, and 'he expired almost inuncdiatpjy afterwords, shortly after four o'clock.

Mr Stoad was roarried in 1876 to Miss Wilkinson, the daughter of a Yorkshire gentJoman. His family consisted of three eons and a daughter— Mr W. G. Stead, who married the daughter of Mr John' Roberts, C.M.G., of Donedin, and is jiow on a visit to England, Mr G. L. St«id, Mr E. F. Stead, and Mrs RusscJl Grace, all of Avhom survive him. Tho deepest sympathy of a very large circle will be extended to the widow and family in their bereavement.
