WHY THE CHILDREN LAUGHED.
In an address on "Laughter" at a meeting of tho Playgoers' Club at the Gaiety Restaurant recently, Mr James Welch, the well-known actor; said that he once wont to the house of a friend who had told his children that Mr Welch was a funny man and would make them laugh. On arriving he told the children all the jokea he knew, but they never laughed at all. Why? Because the father had made himself an advanoe agent for hhn, and as the children expected jokes they were not amused at them. Surprise was of the ossence of laughter. Having failed to make the children laugh he began a conversation with the tather on the Welsh Disestablishment Bill—(laughter) —and the children at once shrieked with laughter. AVhyP Because they did not expect it.
