FORTY-FOUR KILLED
OVER A HUNDRED INJURED.

MELBOURNE. April 22. The total number of the dead is 44,
M riouslj' injured 44, slightly injured 100; four are- in a critical condition. The driver of tho Bendigo train has been driving for thirty years, and was one of the most capable in the service. Ho is almoet distracted by tho disaster.
The driver of the second engine felt the brakes go on, but they were suddenly released again, and the train bounded forward on her errand of destruction.
Bitter comments are being made on tire Tvnnt of preparedness by the Railway Department to oopo with "accidents. It took an hour a-nd threequarters after the summons to get a relief train away.
It is believed that compensation claims will cost the Department £120.000.

Jn addition to tho names already cabled, tho following were killed:— Jos. Davios, C. Williams, Millie Giles, Thos. Atkinson, Rupert Watson, Leonard Gates, G. Hughes, Annie Tucker. The three first named; died at the Hospital. ,
