United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. -SYDNEY, April 18. Tile bowling tournament started in disagreeable weather. The early part of tho day was fine, but thero was a strong wind in the afternoon and drizzling showers.

At the City green, and Finlay wero knocked out in the first round. Bunting, Bishop, and Johnston beat their opponents in tho second round. "Waddell easily disposed of Johnston (Sj-dney), by 21 to 12. Thompson, Neavc, and Broad wont under. Johnston beat his opponent comfortably in that round. Waddell was beaten by Kelly (Victoria) by 21 to 18.

Thero wero good contests at Ashfield. Manning, Coltman, Smith, and McGibbson wero beaten in the first round. Bentley, Ham, Allnutt, and Wallace won their games. In tlie second round Ham, Wallace, and Bentley wero successful.

At Petersham, Bastings and Goldstone won in tne first round, whiloScoullar, Martin, and Stubborfield were defeated. In the second round Bastings succumbed, while Goldstone wou a place in this and in the third round.

In tho somi-finals, at Petersham, Waxman (Victoria) beat Goldstone by 21 to 12. At the City green Johnston was knocked out in the fourth round. Wallace was the only New Zealander remaining in the fifth round. The finals will be played on the City green on Monday.

A Conference of tho Rowling Associations was held with a view to securing uniformity in the rules of the game.

On the motion of Mr Waddell, it was decided that the maximum lengths of greens be 120 ft, and tho minimum was fixed at 110 ft. With regard to the si_e of mats, it was decided that the maximum.be 4ft Gin by 22in, and the minimum 3ft by 15in/

Reference was made to the method of delivery from the mat. Mr Waddell stated that the Now Zealandefs would fall in with any reasonable proposal on the part of the Australian States.

On tho question of testing howls, it was stated that there was want of uniformity throughout Australasia. It was resolved that the standard of genuine bowls be fixed by the various Associations.

In connection with mat blocks, it was arranged that all bowls which did not pass 20ft from tho mat line should bo removed from the greon.
