Sir James Mills, whilst in .ueioourne, interviewed the Federal Government with reference to the extension or renewal of the Canadian mail contract. Xo finality nas yet been reached. The Union Company is willing to provide a mnoh-improved service in return for an increased subsidy with a reasonable term of contract. A MILK FAMINE. The city is suffering from a milk famine. South Coast suppliers are not forwarding any milk owing to the city companies ignoring the local Suppliers' Association after they had agreed to advance the price from 6d to Bd.
NO JURISDICTION. The High Court Las decided that the Federal conciliation and arbitration law oonfera no jurisdiction to settle disputes as regards wages and the conditions of employment on foreign trading ships.
ANOTHER WRECK. Burns, Philp and Co.'s inter-island steamer Louis J. Kenny has been totally -wrecked. The crew -were saved. TIMBER YARD DISPUTE. Tisere has been a renewal of the old strike at McKenzie's timber yards. The casual hands allege that casual work is being done constantly by nontraionists. THE TASMANIAN CABLE. MELBOURNE, April 16. The Government has received six tenders, for the laying down of the Tasmanian cable. It is possible, however, that negotiations with the Eastern Extension Company will bo resumed. The question of wireless telegraphy will also be considered. THE CHINESE BOYCOTT. The Chinese in Melbourne have decided to vigorously enforce the boycott of Japanese goods. NORTHERN TERRITORY. ADELAIDE, April 16. The Government has been advised that the Northern Tom'tory Surrender Bill, by which the Fedoral Government takes control of the Territory, has received the Royal assent. THE KABORL SYDNEY, April 17. The Karori reached Twofold Bay this morning, and left again in the afternoon. A tug was despatched this evening to meet her. SUICIDE AT SEA. HOBART. Aprii 17. Mrs GilmouT, a steerage passenger by the lomio for Dunedin, committed suicide on March 2Lst.
