FIRES.
« Afbout three o'edoek on Wednesday afternoon o. • fire started amonpet the long dry grass on the railway reserve, 'nc<ir tho Ashburton traffic bridge. The alarm was given, and both the manual and steam engine were speedily out of the shed, but a fractious honso> caused considerable delay before tho steamer could be got on tho scene. Meanwhile, the manual was got to work! and with one jet of water and a number of vigorous beaters the fire was got under by the time it had burnt about half an acre of the grass.
