Yesterday '& rise in silver was due to .-overing orders from India on. a poor'y supplied market. The rise produced large offerings, hence the reaction. At the tallow auctions, 1815 casks were offered, and 590 sold. Fine mutton 84s 3d, medium 325. Fine beei 33s 6d, medium 31s 6d. Copper on the spot £62 12s 6<l, three months £63 los. Tin on the spot £123 2s 6d, three months £124 5s Fourteen thousand quarters of Australian January-February shipmont of wheat sold at 41s 3d. TITE UNION BANK OF AUSTRALIA. The Union Bank has declared a dividend of ten per cent., and a bonus ot two per cent. The sum of £10,000 has been placed to the credit of colonial premises account, £30,000 has been carried to the reserve, and £36,000 carried forward. ROBERT CAMPBELL AND SONS. The balance-sheet of Robert Campbell and Sont shows a profit of £48,759. A dividend of ten per cent, has been declared, and £30,753 has been carried forward.

MELBOURNE HIDES MARKET. MELBOURNE, January 9. Hides are in better enquiry. Catalogues were cleared in sellers' favour. WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE. (SPECIAL. TO "THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON, January 9. Business on the Stock Exchange today was brisker than for some time post. The new Union Steam Ship Company shares (30a paid) were sold at 11s premium. There was a demand for Talisman scrip, and shares sold at j£2 12s. Ngatiawas sold at 2s Id, and J Ktirangabakes at 2s.

HASTINGS, January 9. i Messrs Nelson Bros., Ltd., have just j completed loading tho Star of Japan i with a record Hawke's Bay meat shipment, consisting of 19,903 carcases of i mutton, 22,472 carcases of lamb, and 1716 quarters of beef. x (Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable message from their London office, dated Bth inst.:—"Since our last telegram, tallow in general is 3d lower. Buyers are very shy."

HAWAKDEN. At the Hawarden sale yesterday, there was an entry of 2000 sheep, the bulk being fat lambs. Prime fat lambs made 13s to 15s 6d, rape lambs to 12s 6d, fat wethers 16e 6d, twotooth wethers 10s Id.

BTJBNSIDE STOCK MARKET. (press association telegram.) DUNEDEN, January 8. At Burnside to-day 2139 sheep of good quality were penned. Prices on account of the largo yarding showed a declino of fully 2s per head on last week's rates. Quotations are: —Best wethers 18e 6d to 20s, extra to 22b, medium 17s to 17s 6d, inferior 13s 6d to 14s 9d, best ewes 17s 6d to 18e, extra to 19s Gd, medium 13s 6d to 16s, inferior 9s 6d to Us. Lamhs—4oo were penned. Prices showed a slight advance. Quotations are:—Best 15s to 17s, extra to 18e, nredrum 13s 6d to 14s 6d, inferior 11s to 12s. pigs—120 were yarded. Prices were on a par with those of last week. Quotations are:—Suckers 16s to 20s, β-lips 22s to 245, stores 27s to 31s, porkers 40s to 495, light baooners 53s to 575, hefcvy 63s to 745. Cattle—2oo were yarded. The quality generally was good, but on account of the large yarding, prices were about 10s per head easier. Quotations are:—Best hullocks £9 10s to £10 10s, extra to £11 17s 6d, medium £8 7s Gd to £9, inferior £7 to £7 15s, ibest cows and heifers £7 to £7 15s, medium £6 to £6 10s, inferior £4 5a to £5.

MATAWHERO STOCK SAOL IPBESS ASSOCIATION TJCLEGRAM). GISBORNE, January 9. At the Matawhero stock sale the range of prices was:—Fat wethers 12s 6d to 16s, fat ewes 12s to 14s 6d, stores 6s to Us 6d, fat lambe 10s 8d to 12s Id. fat steers £5 to £8, fat cows £3 03 to £5 ss, store steers £2 10s to £3 7a 6d, store heifers £1 to £2 10s. The sale was dull for every class of stock, which was probably accounted for by the dry weather and tho scarcity of feed.

SA!LE OF STOCK. Messrs H. Ilatson and Co. held a clearing sale on account of Mr J. A. MaHae Peacock, at his homestead, "Wai-iti," Swannanoa, yesterday. It was the largest and most successful sale that has been held in the district for many years, and as Mr Peacock's stock of all descriptions is so well and favourably known, a large crowd turned up from all pants, including buyers from as far south' as Oamaru. Considering the very dry season, prices realised far exceeded expectations, and bidding throughout was animated. The following are some of the sales:—Four hundred four-tooth lialfbred Leslie Hills ewes 225, 389 four-tooth lialfbred Glynn Wye ewes 21e 3d (the huyer of both these lines being Mr James Austin, Winchester), 650 six and eight-tooth threequarterbred ewes lls to 14s lOd, 829 fat ewes 14s 6d, 667 crossbred lambs (mixed sexes) 11s, G3B three-quarter-bred lambs (mixed sexes) 10s. A large number of pigs were offered, pedigree sows fetching from SJgs to 33gs, 1 boar 3Jgs, baeoners up to £3. sows and litters from £6 10s to £7 10s, slips from 20s 6d to 22a. Seventeen draught horses were offered and all sold. They were all good sorts, and came forward in splendid order, and met with keen competition. Prices ranged from £31 to £50, averaging about £43: hackneys up to £20, unbroken horses from £15 to £31. The laTge collection of implements and sundries also met with froady competition. As a eign of the times it is interesting to # know ihafc there wero seventeen motor cars at the sale from all parts of the country, the majority of them belonging to farmers.
