PRESS COMMENT ON THE SWINTON MATCH.
SYDNEY. January 9. English Press comments on the Swinton match are. to band. The "Daily Telegraph" says:—' ; Tho heavy turf and greasy ball have been particularly severe on the Xoiv Zcalanders in their several recent engagements. They had to oppose Swinton uniler conditions very damaging to their prospects. So heavy was tho rain niter the commonoomont of the second half, that play had to be stopped for fiv- minutes. During tlie remainder of tho match the ground was in a terriblo condition. Under tho circuinetanees. the Colonials' win by 11 to 2 ■α-ns n good performance, md tlie victory, though claimed chiefly as t:he result of splendid goal kicking by Messenger, who was successful with four placekicks, was deserved on the general run of play. Tho Colonials gained, all their points in the first half.' Th« "Daily News" save:— "Tho coloniale, with tho wind against them, were herd pressed. at etertinjr. but their defence held out. In the- second half thoro was little to ohooso between the teams, the fine play of tho iSwinton forwards being counterbalanced by the euperioT form of the Xew Zealand, backs." , Tho "Dairy Chronicle*' says:—"The victory was grained by superior pjay all round- Considering the shocking state of the field, the football was of p. very high class, and the result thoroughly in keeoing with the New Zoalandere , marked superiority."
