Lecturing at Hartford, Connecticut, Captain Hobson, of Santiago Bay renown, declared thnt Americans had been "taking backwater" from Japan, and now only one thing was wanting before war was declared—a protest. Considerable indignation ia expressed at such jingoism. Captain Hobson becamo a national hero in the Spanish war by taking a steamer and sinking her in tho entrance of Santiago harbour, with tho ouject of bottling up tho Spanish fleet. He failed to sink tho vessel in the right place, but his heroism in taking the ship close up to the Spanish batteries, winch riddled tho vessel, thrilled America.
