Considerable indignation ia expressed at such jingoism. Captain Hobson becamo a national hero in the Spanish war by taking a steamer and sinking her in tho entrance of Santiago harbour, with tho ouject of bottling up tho Spanish fleet. He failed to sink tho vessel in the right place, but his heroism in taking the ship close up to the Spanish batteries, winch riddled tho vessel, thrilled America. Ho was picked up by a Spanish launch.
