WOOL SALES.

D&lgety and Company, Lnniwd. report:—The third of tie local series of wool sales was bold on Bt!h >iJid 9t. l i inst., when .17,862 boles were offered, as against 15,569 bales oi the corresponding sale lost year. Tier© was a better selection of wool than at the earlier eales, a larger number of good station cHpe being forward. As a result mainly of the dry season experienced over the greater portion of Canterbury iaet eummesT, tie majority of the clipe axe shabbier in appearance than last season. On the other hand, there is leas yoll* in the wool, and a better yield, which is a most important feature from a buyer's point of view. Tlie hacdrhier tone reported recently from Bradford was fully reflected at this pale, and the lively competition experienced was in pleasing contrast to Christ cihurch December saio; indeed, this sale was much the most' eatisfactoiy we have had this season. Tlie New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report: — The third salo of tho season was commeiioed on Wednesday at tho Canterbury Hail, and was concluded on Thursday. 'Ithe total offerings were rery little more than at tho second series, tie associated brokers offering, in all, about bales. This quantity is about 2aOO moro than the corresponding sale last season, but the total ottenngs for the season are no far from 4000 to SUUU bales short of last year. Tiioro was a good attendance of buyers, including some not previously present at the nrst and second ealos. On the other hand, some of the larger buyem at tho previous sales were not so strongly, in,evidence. Local buyers and speculators accounted tor a fair quantity of the wool sold, and the factories competed keenly, for merinos and fine haliureds. jj'or the former, especially, they practically cleared tho board. Prices on the whole were rather better than a.t the December series, merinos especially meeting with better, oompetition and selling at about id over December rates. Fine halfbreds in the majority of instances met a very good enquiry, but prices were about on a par. Medium halfbreds were firm at late rates, and three-quaj-terbrerls and fine crossbreds were decidedly better to the extent of about id to id per lb. The coarse and dirty crossbreds wore comparatively neglected, though scarcely to the same extent as last sales. Although the competition for these improved somewhat, prices were really about id lower. Pieces, bellies and locks, etc., scarcely met as good competition, but prices were fairly woll on a par with late rates . Tho quantity disposed of is considerably greater than at the December series, but many lots of the coarse wools were passed in and will, in a good many instances, meet their fate in London on account of the growers. The offerings did not comprise so many faulty, tender and earthy lote as a; the second sale, a goodly number of those sorts appearing in the catalogues being passed in lots from the previous sales. These, in most oases, did not realise tho prices at which they were previously passed in. Our range of prices was:—Merino,' 82d to 11 i<l, quttrterbred IOJd, halfbred 7id to tliree-quarterbred 6d to Bld, crossbred ojd to Bid, Southdown 9:Jd, pieces 4jd to , 9*d, bellies 44d to BW, locks ajd io ojd. vur principal sales woro:— Merino—VC over Mt.
