NORTH CASTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
The meeting of the North Oanterbury Education Board yesterdiy was attended by Messrs Dalziell (Chairman), Pcrvman, D. Buddo, M.P., C. A. C. 'Hardy, M.P., T. Roto, Ronnie, J. Jamieson, and Dr. Hight. REPORTS. Tho Buildings Committee recomirendcd that application be made to the Denurtmentior funds to carry out improvements at Addington school; that improvement of tho Phillipstown water supply he left in the hands of the Clerk of Works; the name Kukupa tv 36 approved for the Pigeon Bay oide fchcol. In reference to the representations made by the School Committees' Association on the matter of school savings banks, it was resolved that the Board recognises the difficulty of acknowledging all amounts under £1 'by the Public (Savings Eank, and would suggest that the headmaster or teacher in charge of the school fund should make a quarterly return to parents and children. The report wa6 adopted. Tho Appointments Committee recommended the following appointments :—Christchurch East (Gloucester 6treet), Miss Ethel Thompson, assistant mistress; Lcnvcliffe, Miss M. Wills, mistress; Omihi, Miss M. E. Sheriff, mistress. Tho following applications for appointment had been received and considered :—Hinds, master; Hanmer Plains, mistress; Ash burton, assistant master; Woodstock, mistress (sole charge); Irwcll. mistress; Reddiffs, mistress. Miss Elsie M. Ormondy was recommended for appointment as mistress at West Melton. Miss M. Wills wrote, withdrawing her application for Lovcliffe School, on the ground that die could not arrange to occupy the house. It was proposed to tho Committee that Miss Mclver should be appointed. The resignation of Mr S. Bullock, headmaster of the Fendalton School, was received and accepted, to take effect on April 14th. In view of his long cervice under the Board, it was agreed to grant Mr Bullock a month's leave of on full salary. The resignations of Mies M. Clothier, mistress at Huntingdon, and Miss S. L. Hately, mistress at Little Akaloa, were received and accepted. The following resignations were received and accepted :—Mies D. HempleiEan, os mistress at Flemington; Miss G. F. Gibson, assistant, secondary department, Lincoln; Mi6s A. E. White, mistress at Kyle. A letter was received from Mr D. L. Sinclair, the holder of a Gammack Scholarship, asking that for the remaining two years of the term he might be allowed to hold the scholarship at Dunedin, where he wished to continue medical study. It was agreed to reply that the Board had no power to vary the terms of the Gammack Bequest, which, in the opinion of the Board's solicitors., clearly sets out that tho scholarships shall be held in connection with the Canterbury College. The report was adopted. GENERAL. A -deputation from the Woolston Committee waited on the Board in support of an application for an additional porch, and for a refund of expenditure in putting in a pump. The matter was referred to the Bu,ildings Committee. A circular memorandum from the Department, asking whether in ' the opinion of the Board and Inspectors, it was desirable or feasible to adopt' uniform school books for all public schools, was referred to the Appointments Committee and Inspector for a joint report. Tho General Labourers' Union wrote advocating the adoption of single desks made in the Dominion. It was resolved to reply on the same lines as the answer furnished to the School Committees' Association. The Officer Commanding No. 1 Cadet Battalion reported upon tho • recent camp of instruction, at Rangiora. The Board expressed its appreciation of the good work done; the officers were' complimented upon the discipline maintained and the care taken of the boys. It was decided that cap covers be procured for the cadets for use in hot weather. After considering several matters in committee tho Board adjourned.
