ENGLAND'S REPROACH.
AN APPEAL FOR CRIMEAN AND MUTINY VETERANS.
TO RESCUE THEM FROM THE WORKHOUSE.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received January Bth, 10.20 p.m.) LONDON, January 8. Lord Roberts has appealed, to tha nation to Subscribe money to rescue Crimean and Indian Mutiny veterans from the workhouse. The King has become patron of tbe fend, and hassubscribed 1000 gnineas The Prince of Wales, the Duke of Connaught, and Prince Christian aro vicepatrons. An extremely influential committee has been formed. The other day tho "Daily Telegraph" emphasised thestatement that many of the veterans of the Indian Mutiny who were recently entertained at a banquet in the Albert Hall came from the workhouse and returned thither. "The nation," it urged, "must rescue them and terminate such a reproach." It is satisfactory to know that th© survivors of the Charge of the Light Brigado are fairly well cared for, and are spared tho work ho use. At the last annual gathering pf the survivors of tbe charge, Mr Roberts briefly sketched tbo progress of the Balaclava Fund since it started in 1897. The War Office had, he said, the names of but 17 men who took part in the charge. He found 67—many in the. workhouse. Of the 35 at present alive, no fewer thin 26 were supported by th© fund. There was not a single survivor in th© workhouse now, and bo had also been instrumental in getting tho War Office to grant pensions to ©even of tho men who were not receiving pensions. But even then the fund was necessary, for a man and his wife could not live on a shilling a day.
