ANGLING NOTES.
* The long spell of dry weather has bad a marked effect on North Canterbury rivers, and particularly on the Ashley. 11l some places i*ho Ashley has lost all semblance to a flowing river, the course being marked only by a line of small pools. As a result the fish are suffering by being imprisoned in the pools. The Acclimatisation Society has made arrangements to remoTO as many as possible to the more permanent parts of the river, where u» flour of w«ter is maintained. Good fly fishing is being obtained in the Ashley at nights. Several Christehurch anglers who recently made visits to the river secured good bags of nice fish. Anglers who fished the mouth of the Itakaia during the holidays were rewarded with good catches, which included several heavy fish. To-morrow the Accliinitisatiion Society is sending 3000 brown, trout to be liberated in the Waikari etroom Ub the "Weka. Pass. A start wiM be made this week to concrete the edges of the ponds in the Acclimatisation. Society'e gardens. The work, judging by the results achieved last eeaeon, should effect a marked improvement in the .appearance 'of tie gardens, and be distinctly beneficial to fcbo poods.
