WELLINGTON NOTES.
(special to "xhe tress.") WELLINGTON, December 30. A canny American is closely examining tho Department of Industries and Commerce by mail. '-Hare you a furniture factory in your city (Wellington)?" be asks. "Have you one xn Auckland or Chri&tchurchi , Would a planing mill pay in any of the above townst"' Ho explains that his interests iio in iurniture, and then enquires whorher there is a gUss factory in NewZealand. He conlvesos that he is not a giu&smaker, but has "a friend who is a iinst-class men in tho business." In his ad<lre=s to the Students Conference at Trent ham, the Key. A. Dewdney, of Wellington, touched upon a topic of general _ interest when he dealt with science a.nd Christianity. Ho observed that many of the most eminent savante were Christians, and this, ho argued, wee a sufficient refutation of Haeckel's assertion that faith was one of the greatest barriers to science. There was no doubt, however, that tho attitude of orthodox Christunity to scientific investigation had often been unreasonab!o. The Church had no authority to pronounce judgment on scientific questions. The man of science, on tho other hand, must remember that as such ho had no more right to pronounce on religious questions. Scientific men, by making a speciality of one subject,"might lose tho faculty of religion. Tho specialist must ever keep in remembrance tho wider world. Christianity had no causo to fear the investigations of science. Certwu detaib ot creeds might hare to bo revised, but tho essentials would remain. It is understood that Mr Kmr Hardio will not be able to leave Wellington for several d.ays. He will probably cancel tho remainder of his projected tour through the Dominion and sail direct from Wellington.
