TIMARU, December 30

The cars taking part in the CanterImry Automobile Association's reliability trial from Cbrlstchurch to Dunedin nu<l back are again at Timaru, having left Dnnicdin this morning on their return journoy to Christchurch. It is indeed fortunate that the success of tho trial hae not co far been marred by anything in the nature of a casualty or a smash up, and 'that it is a fact that ejH'aks well for the reliability of tho cars and the caro of the drivors.

.Mr J , '. H. Jamas, who is the official ntnrtcr, got th« card marshalled up promptly this morning outeide tho garaye at Duuwlin, and beginning with tho fimt or' tho email ours, despatched all promptly at tho appointed time. Tliore wns a email crowd o f local enthusiasts present to soo tho start, and when the last enr had got «wuy, thm> hearty cheers were yiven for Mr Jamoe. The routo back was tho same as that traversed on Saturday, the first section of tho journey lying through the hiiU that surround Dunedin.

The experience of (Saturday, when quite a number of cars had to crawl into Dunedin in order not to com© in within their minimum timo, wan not forgotten, and tho drivers to-day were mord oareful in regulating their'speed, with tho result that an even pa-co was maintained throughout, and tho care wovr. not so much bunched together. Tho hills agnin proved somewhat trnuMoeotno, ami eevernl of the cars had little, if any, timo in hand by the timo Oamaru waa reached. In fact, one oar, .Mr D. Matron's lo Ji.p. Taibot, lo&t so much time between Duncdin and Oniunru thnt an average speed of 33 miles an hour had to Co maintained to yet the car into Timaru before tho maximum timo limit had expired.

Oneo on the flat country, however, no diflicnltice were encountered with tin* pxcoptioii oP a strojig head wind, which iiicrcaecd the. work of the «vngin«¥i. and practically tho only troiibleH w<>re those relating to tyres. There, wore tho neiial ninnber of minor tyro iniuhups but Mr KngliHh'e 10-12 Stuart car suffered A somewhat serious mialbrtuno in losing 0110 of the driving wheel tyrte altogother. Tho tyro wit* removed from tho wheel when tho car was some distance out from Timnrii, und ac it could not bo replacedj tlie journey vrua finished on the bare rim.

11l rough whatever localitic« the. care pssisod, tho people turned out to ehout sensonablo greutinas and to wish the coinpctitors good luck. Ono man took advantage of tho procession to nocnetoin a UCTvljr trained horse to tho and- noiso of miotor cars. nio llret cur arrivcrl at I'imaru shortly nftor lmlf-paet four, nnd tho others followed more or !<■« irrreularly. ,lb-morrow morning the last etaj?o of the journry will be conimoncod. and passinj? through Itaknia Gorge and liororatA, tho mm will reach Chnstchtiroh «t about 6 o'clock, th© nniehing point being Latimor equaro. Mr a. a. M, McDonald, who had ttfide mi Pxccllont run to Dunwlin on ,jm V h.p. Dion caiv found, on going to «tnrt his engino at Duncdin this morning, that uu oxhauat valve wne brokon. Tho frncturo must hare oooiirrod Avhon tho ongitio was cooling down in tlio after tho run to ; JJulicdin had bt«on completed, but the tfoublo was sufficiently norious to prevent Mr McDonald continuing In tho trial. Two or throe. 0f tho competitwa. took r ft'wro'ug'turning when eomo distance out from Ditneclin. nnd -woro put to tho annoyance of having to turn b«elc a4?ain to reach the proper, road.; .
