DEATH OF AN INFANT.
An inquest iraa held at the Keiapoi Courthouse yesterday, before Mr J. H. Blackweflil, aotjng-Coroner, touching the death of tho fourteen/-day-old child of a local resident. Dr. Devies said the Quantity of condensed milk gdven. from 'riday till Sunday wee sufficient, hut feediijig from a bottle was very objectionable. Hβ remarked that humanised milk could now bo obtained. Our Darfield correspondent reports that on Friday Inst, whilo driving along the Charing Cross road, Mr Harry Caaidy mot with a painful accident. The horse boing young and restive took fright at something on tho road, end in awervinfj overturned the, trap. Mr Candy and his two children were thrown on tho road, tho horse careering towards home with the, overturned vehicle. It was fortunately stopped before going far, and Mr Candy and children were picked np and managed to drivo homo. Dre. J. H. «nd W. Simpson found that Mr Candy had sustainf<l a fracture of tho pelvis, and in consequence will hare to lay up for about cix weeks. The children escaped with a shaking. Mr Candy is now progressing satisfactorily. (special to "the press. , ') GREYMOUTH, December 23. Mr Thornton, one of the directors of the Montgomery Terrace Sluicing Company, Blackball, had tho misfortune- to break his right arm at tho wrist, while visiting the claim on Saturday. Ho slipped en a piece of timber "and fell heavily on a *»tone. Dr. Hanly, of Blackball, Ret. tho arm, and the patient k now progressing ac well as can be expected. The myeterioua disappearance of a coloured lad known as Sam Macdonald, aged about 18 yea.ro., was reported to the police to-day by Mr J. Alexander, by -whom he was employed. Mr Alexander had engaged tMacdonald to go out with him on his oil launch on an excursion this morning, and the lad •went out in a dinghy to the launch jlast night. This morning neither Macdonald nor the dinghy could be found, end it is eirpposed that the dinghy waa capsized and the lad drowned. BLENHEIM, December 23. A man named Jobson was drowned in the .Sounds by falling off the launch Victory on Saturdny night.
