THE HOLIDAY.
The fifty-seventh anniversary of Canterbury wns celebrated yesterday. Tho weather was very favourable for outdoor events, tho excessive heat of tho preceding day bein£ 'Succeeded by a pleasant easterly breeze. The annual excursion to Akaroa by fho Rotoma-h-ana attracted a large number of passengers: indeed, moro than tho Customs officials would allow to go presented themselves. 'ine excursion to Staircase Gully by railway was also well patronised. Yin* pioneers of tho province mustered in Latimer square :u:d went through the usual ordeal of being photographed. They also passed a resolution for transmission to the Itight Hon. the. Premier earnestly pjotestin£ against Anniversary Day cut out of tho lust of holiday*. Tho cricket match Auckland v Canterbury on Hagley Park for tho Plunkct Shield attracted a largo number of interested spectators. On Lancaster Park tho New Zealand Wheel Race meeting was well attended. Tho Motukarara eports, an annual fixture that is always most popular with holiday makers, drew a goodly number, and a pleasant davvras spont. Tho Sum nor, New Brighton, and Cashmere, trams wore crowded on every trip with picnio parties, and Wainoni Park was ako a centre of attraction. Altogether Anniversary Day, IP!)", wns celebrated in a most thorcngh manner, and it is satisfactory to record tlmt there was no accident to mar tho pleasure of tho holiday. There was a good trade on the North line, many people going to jlanigiora to visit the cadet camp. ASHBIJRTOX. Tho weather at Ashburton was beautifully fine for Anniversary Day, which was observed as a close holiday. Tlie members ot tho Fire Brigade, together with a iargo number of friends, went to tho Asbton boach, where- they held their annual picnic. Tho children ot tho Baptist Sunday School held their annual picnic at Wakanui. The Ashburton Domain Cricket Oval, the bowling green, crwjuot lawn, and tennis courts, wero fully occupied during the dnv. A team representing tho -Ualvern Cricket Atsociaiion. played an Ashburton County team, and won an interesting match by 300 runs to Ashburton'a Jill.
