A LOST ATLANTIS.
NEW ZEALAND'S SUBMERGED CONTINENT. A rough estimate of the extent of that greater New Zealand of prehistoric times, now submerged, is one of ' the many important results that may ,bo expected to accrue from tho recent 'scientific expedition to tho Auckland and other southern island* (says yesterdays 'Otago Daily Times'). Such Jβ the opinion of Dr. Marshall, who hue tnado exhaustive- geological research at Campbell leland and elsewhere, with >tho recently-returned expedition. "'I have no doubt Campbell Island and tho Aucklnude were once joined to, and formed a part of, New Zealand,' , eiiid J>r. Marshall. -'The flora we fouiid thore boara a very clear relationship to that found on the mainland. Imagine an upland district ot New Zealand and you have Campbell Inland, ns far as Horn is concerned. The apace between the two is »00 miles, and, of course, thut is a good distance. How, whecn. and why did the wibmer■ion of greater New Zealand take place? Well, that opens up rather a wide field, but I believe this expedition, when the- members have tabulated their evidence, will throw a good deal eof light on all these important questions." The head shepherd had lieen on Campboll Island for two years. Kxceptnij; tho sheep, there were no signs of animal life, but there were se.abirds m abundanoo and plenty of sea lion*. Tho only memories were an oid hut and the graves of two or three of i ilhol's Frenohmen. There was not a woman on the island, but there had been onto. Sho lived in tho ruined hut mentioned above, and concerning her are many •toriea. One was that she was a Royal Princess related to Princo Charlie; but another, loss romantic and, alas, more probable, state.* that she was the associate of some old-time, whaler. .She left the island, and probably the world, many years ago, and only lier hut and toe stories remain.
