CRIMINAL TRIALS.
1 - i (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 27. Two youths named Frank Carroll and Francis Lyons wore to-dey admitted to probation and ordered to pay the costs of prosecution on a charge of setting fire to an outhouso adjoining a Chinaman's shop. The principal offender, Burgess, had previously been admitted by 'Mr Justice Button to pronation, which Mr Justice Cooler today said was stretching the First Offenders Act to its utmost limit. • He v&s aware that amongst some people there wae a strong raciaJ feel ing against Chinese, but lie wished it to be understood that'offence? agnir.st Chinamen would bo punished just the' same as they were against Europeans.
