■ -r t ' ;■■'.:. ~ iv: : .... . ... '.The sixth annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Mothers' Union was, held yesterday afternoon. , There was a good attendance, presided over by Archdeacon Scott. ; The annual report stated-that the roporte-from the branches were very satisfactory. the membership was 1540, with .50 associates. In reviewing the work of the yearj there was much reason to be encouraged. One thing wae to be lamented, however, and that was the dearth of speakers. There were only a few, and these were overworked. The report , concluded with an urgent appeal to those who wore able to assist in the work. The balance-sheet showed receipts £48 3s 3d and expenditure £40 10s 7d, leaving a credit balance of £7 l≥B Bd. The Chairman congratulated the " Union,on the success which had attend- : ed its' during the year. The steps taken in regard , to the production of humanised milk, he said, could bo laid to the credit of the Union. Speaking on subject of dress, ho urged that the influence, of a woman ■ did not depend on-her-character alone, but also upon her personal appearance and the state of cleanliness in which she kept her home. The Rev. T. Tait, in the course of a brief address, remarked that women were always to the front in good work, and the men too prone to let them retain that position. The aims put forward by the Union were exceedingly simple, but, all the same, exceedingly lofty. The Union had done splendid work, but it had accomplished' nothing- better than its crnsade For the preservation of infant life. There '. was every likelihood of the enterprise i proving a thorough success. The report- and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. , The following officers were re-elect-ed:—Vice-president, Mrs Scott; hon. treasurer and- .secretary, Mrs Kirki patrick. "
