Madam© Valette, an eldorly woman living in Paris, claims to bo the daughter of T. C. Druce's natural son by a Frenchwoman. She asserts that Druce sent her father to Australia on a mission to discover a half-brother. He was away a yenr. On returning to Paris he was fatally stabbed by footpads, who fitolo liis birth certificate and other documents. Druco came to Paria terribly distressed and gave her a sealed envelope, bidding her guard it carefully. After hearing of Drnoe'e death she was amaeed to ccc him enter her tobeceoniet chop four yearn after tho Franco-Prussian, wnr. On her Expressing astonishment he replied, "Yes, Druce is dond, but Portland is still living." She nerer opened the envelope, and now proposes to it to George llollamby Druce.
