She had neither meet* itor spars, and was reeling with oil and blubber. You coald hardly conceive tho change that was wrought in that short space of time. As for the deck-house, you would wonder how any human being could exist in it. The overhauling and refitting was oarried oat by Messrs It. and H. Green, Ltd., of Blackwall, wlio fitted up tho 'Morning. They executed their contract in a wonderfully expeditions and most faithful manner, and wo wore extremely fortunate to obtain their services. At present the Nimrod draws 13 feet of water, but when loaded for tho ice ehe will draw seventeen foot. The hut that we are to erect will Imi heated with oil, but the cooking will bt» done by means of a range burning coal and wood. I tun extremely pleased j to learn that Mt J. J. Kinsey has con- j eepted to act as out representative in ' \nw Zealand. He did everything ho possibly could for us in connection with the Morning, and that was a very yreat deal, I can toll you, and his generous I ehall never forget. Wβ purpose, taking down a few : live sheep, and killing thorn when it is cold enough, and ko, of course, the. carwises will then keep indefinitely. At priwent we have an ico-house on the Nimrod which has been of great convenience to us coming out, but as wo til all not have any room for it, it will be left ashore at Lyttelton. Most of tho provisions for tho landing party hnvo been specially prepared and brought out from Home, but the bulk of the ship's provisions will bo taken on 'board at Lyttelton. It was a treat, I can tell you, last night to taste delightful New Zealand butter and cheeeo ono« again. Unfortunately, on the j N'irnrod there is not n largo amount of accommodation, as you m«iy well imagine from her size—only 227 tons register, quite, another Captain Cooker. Tho petty ofiicers have the best quarter.*, , while in the officers' quarters dressing is a .matter of considerable difficulty. The forecastle, however, is some/what better. How are wo going to accommodate tho extra people when they come? Oh, well, I suppose wo shall push them in somewhere. Certain, alterations will bo niadu to oope with this difficulty, but of course, no ntrtictural changes of any extent will be Tho vessel w«s chosen for her stability end general staunchness, and in these respoote is all that could possibly be desired. Wβ shall be taking down a ton and a half of carbide for the acetylene gas plant, which is to light tlu> hut, and in every way this apartment will bo very much better equipped than the Discovery's. The ;■-. hut ie 38ft long, 19ft wide, and 8 ft high, witih double walls of yellow pine, tlio four-inch space between being fill- ;-, ed wi-fcli granulatou , cork. After the '" .i landing party hae settled down, tho i;';\ . : three cuD-divisions will push out in (>.«■.; their-respective directions, estoblishfp\ ;.'-., ving depots. Mr ShaekJetpn's party, will !','>;,'; establish food dtepots every 100 miles, ;,,,•;/' and the location of these will be disMV; tinguiahed by black flags flying from j.is-v , bamboo poles eet in cairns and visible 'f'£fr for about three miles. After having : -:' got all his depots established, it is an- •';>'. tioipated that Mr Shackleton will set @: - „ out on his Big journey in October, i< ...■•V- 1908. Among other pleasing features if! attending our arrival hero tact night I; ! ' wee the offer extended by Mr A. Kaye i;. ■..;\ i and Captain Clarke, on behalf of tho !
