MELBOURNE CUP DRESSING.

One of the features of the races this year (says tho Melbourne "Argus'") has been the small display of jewellery. Occasionally one could see the flash of a diamond star pendant as it caught tho light, but on the whole jewellery was not worn. It would nlso seem that the days when women tried to outdo each other by the gorgeousness of their apparel are of the past, for. although tho dressing was often magnificent, there was little to cavil at. Of course, the inappropriatelydressed woman will always be found at a popular race meeting, just ss there will always ho women who challenge public attention by the extraordinary nature of their attire. But this year these last achieved their ends mostly by exaggerating the modes of the movement nther than by any original means. There is always fluwoman who thinks she is well dressed, because her gown i* expensive. "I nlwavs tell my drevmakcr she can have up to £30 for my Cup dress." one lady was heard to say, "so I ju&t let her do wlnt .'he likes, end I know I've the most for my money." Bho certainly had. frr her .grown was of cpple-grc-cn chiffon, patterned with big roses, and liberally trimmed with black velvet, arranged in true lovers' knots, on the skirt. This wa* mounted on a white silk foundation, adorned with ruches of green and pink wlk; black velvet bows and guipure trickled all over the bodice, and tassels were i groat feature. On her head she wore a big white oloclie hat, with a long fox-t:iilod heliotrope plume, which ted on her shoulder,, and « floater veil reached below her -waist. Her feet showed whito silk stockings, embroidered with green and silver, and bet shoos were of silver, with emerald buckles. tSucb attention to detiils had their reword, for tho was noticed by all who passed.
