THE NEW FERRY'STEAMER.
: « THE MAORI BREAKS ANOTHER RECORD. i After making the run from Welling- • ton to Lyttelton in the record time.of • 9 hours 29 minutes from "full speed i" to stop," th© Union Company's new t turbine "flier" Maori has added to her " laurels by ateaming.from Lyttelton to 1 Wellington in 9 hours 18 minutes. The vwrtel left Lyttelton wharf at 8.46 p.m. on Thursday. With a I light north-oast wind and a smooth . sea, the Maori aped up the* coast at an . average speed of well over 18 knots , an hour, and arrived at Wellington at t 6.10 a.m. yesterday, after an ©xcepI tionally fast run of. 9 hours 25 minutes. . Th© time from to heads was 8 i houra 41 minutes. The average Bpeod [ from "full speed to \stop" was 18:59 . knots per hour, and from heads to , heads 18.66 knots.. t The Maori has thus lowered hot > Wednesday night, record from Welling- . ton to Lyttelton by 13 minutes, and [ the Maheno's record from Lyttelton to _ Wellington by 34 minutes. Some doubt appears to have arisen i as to whether the fast-steaming runs* , made by the Maheno, Maori, and other . vessels are actually from "wharf *to ,' Vharf" or from "full speed to stop." . It should bo stated that in all cases , the runs mad© ar© from the time the . vessel's engines are going "full speed . ahead" after clearing wharves or , breakwaters until they are slowed down when coming .into port. In ; many cases the steamers after leaving . wharves ar© ■ manoeuvrins for aomo minntes before they ! , get clear k of wharrc* and are properly started _ on their run to tho next port w
