, JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS. ____-— i There were on view on Wednesday at the offices of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Hereford street, several plants of rape, taken from a 'iM-acro crop grown by Mr R. Letter, Barry's B*y, Banks Peninsula. The plants measured from i the level of the surface to the top of the leaves 18i inches, apd the leaves , were 16 inches in length. This growth! was attained in five and a-half weeks. The crop is a remarkably fine one, the soil being rich and free, and being close to the Head of the Bay tbe plant* were not'a fleeted by frost. _ After a vory warm day on Sunday, { with a north-west wind (writes our Waimate correspondent), a mild rain commenced early on Monday forenoon, with /south-west windj and continued about seven', houri), a vory acceptable 1 .change of weather. Cereals, grass and fruit; trees, which were backward last month, have rapidly advanced, and the country presents the prospect of abundance of feed in tho pastures over hill and plain, and of a good and early . harvest. The young wheat and oat plants are growing fast, and in many i cases earlynsown wheat will soon shoot into ear. There is a full average extent of land' sown with cereal crops throughout the district.. Tho sowing of turnips over a large area is being proceeded Avith under very favourable circumstances. After forty years' residence in the district the writer considers that never beforo have the fallows and land prepared for turnip and other green, crops been so well cleaned and prepared as has been the case this year. Potatoes, though not grown on an extensive scale generally on tho farms around, taken on the whole occupy a largo extent of ground. The later-planted potatoes are rapidly bursting through tho soil, and tho earlier sowings in" gardens and small patches are glowing fast and look healthy. .Shearing is going on generally on farms and lowland stations, tha fleece in some instances being not so good in ] quality or quantity as usual, presum- j ably the effect of the dryness and harsh ' weather of last winter. Tho lambing season has been successful to the extent of at least 100 per cent, increase. | Our .Springfield correeriondeni reports that tho weather in that district recently, though unsettled, has, on tho whole been very conducive to giowth. and crops aro looking very well. Very little snow is now left on Mount Torlessc and Benmore. Shear ing is now pretty general, but tho back country runholders have not yet made a start. Several very fine crops of barley arc to bo seen in the Kaituna district, where the best grain in tho province is grown. iSeveral paddocks are out in ear. Other crops aro much more forward, and rain is badly wanted to brine thera on Tho area shut up for cocksfoot on tho Peninsula is said to be hardly as largo as usual. Owing to tho scarcity of feed last year, some of the cocksfoot paddocks bad to be grazed, and on this land tho crop will be very lighF, as it takes two seasons to get a good growth after being grazed all the year. On the wholo the crop is expected to bo a light one, as there has not been j sufficient rain, and some of the fnc°s aro drier than others. i Lake Ellcsmere is seldom .".eon ... i low as it is at present. Tlie flats are j becoming green with vegetation of a j kind that is specially suitable for cattle and sheep. 'Ihe leasees of thoso flats' I m ill have a good season in consequence, j
