THE PRESERVATION OF INFANT LIFE.
_ « THE HUMANISED MILK SUPPLY
The scheme inaugurated by tho So* eiety for tho Preservation of Infant Life, in the direction of supplying humanised milk, is to bo brought into operation to-day. A number of orders for the prepared material are already to hand, and these, it is anticipated, will be very largely increased as time goes oil and the virtues of tha tood became more widely appreciated. Tiie milk is drawn from a specially selected herd of thirty cows, on tho Christchurch Dairy Company's Halswell farm, nnd on Monday evening and yesterday these animals were subjected to a rigid inspection by Captain Clayton (.Government Veterinarian), ;ui<l Mr A. Macpherson (District Inspector oi* Dairies). On Monday evening the cows were submitted to tho tuberculin test by Captain Clayton, Mr Macpherson examining the udders for. contagious mammitis and other disorders. The process was made particularly severe, in order that no loophole 'for doubt as to the absolute purity of the milk should remain. As a result several of the cows were rejected as unfit lor duty. It is intended to inspect the herd every month. , The whole of the premises have been socially prepared by the company (.under the supervision of Mr P. Wat* son. manager) lor the undertaking, and nothing more complete in the way or equipment could be desired. The milking shod is a large, lolly, well-ventilated building constructed on most approved principles, and with all facilities avail* aisle lor the maintenance of scrupulous cleanliness. Thence the milk is eonveved in closed cans to the cooling apartment, and the temporaturo reduced to 00 degrees. It is then dopo. sited in sealed cans and conveyed to town each morning for treatment at tho company's Tuam street factory. The whole of the grounds surrounding the premises have been sown down in grass to prevent dust blowing about, and on every side there is evidence ; of a desire to handle the milk in th* most cleanly and hygienic manner po*. Bible. Dr. Fineli. District Health Of. fieer, paid a visit to tho farpi y**ter. day morning, and expressed aatisfno. tion with all of the arrangements. When tho milk is delivered at the town factory, it will lie taken in charga by Nurse MoKinnoii and Miss GmU trey, tlie former lady returning to Dunedin when Nurse Morgan (who ta at present studying Dr. Truby King* , methods) comes back to supervise tho operation. Humanised milk trill bn prepared by tho Indies named according to different formulae for different ages. The milk •will be delivered by Ilia Dairy Company early each afternoon in quantities not lean than a pint, in special glass bottles, sealed with a cardboard cop, which is destroyed after once being used. The bottles ar« . supposed to bo returned to tlie carter* washed, but in any case they will be / eterilieed at the factory before being i utilised again.
