PRESENTATION TO MR J. A. McCULLOUGH.
♦— At a largely-attended social hfeld in the Druids' Hall, Sydenham, on Saturday night, a presentation was made to Mr J. A. McCullough by his former fel-low-workers in the Addington workshops. Mr E. Cameron presided. In presenting Mr McCullough with a purse of sovereigns and dressing-case, Mr J. Sinclair said he did not know of any other person than Mr McCullough who would have made such a sacrifice for the cause he had at heart. Mr Sinclair also handed Mr McCullough a brooch for Mrs McCullough. Mr McCullough, in returning thanks, said that on many occasions he had been misunderstood, and his criticisms of Liberalism had been misunderstood, too. He then went on to explain why he had becopie an advocate >n the cause of Labour. He wanted, he said, to see a better social system prevail in New Zealand, and a virile race produced. New Zealand Liberalism had not come up to tho standard it should have done, ''nd he had accordingly condemned it. Deeply as he regretted having been discharged, he felt that there was always the consolation that the men still employed by the Government would liave the benefit of any good that might nccruo from his humble efforts in the cf.u.se of Labour. He urged the State workers to join some political organisation, for no Government would grant the reform he had advocated, and other reforms, until it was compelled.
