JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS.
As volume scron of tho Shorthorn Herd Book ie now* in hand, tho Cantorbury A. and P. Association are notifying breeders that pedigrees intended (or insertion therein should bo forwarded, nt once. Cows must show fire and bulk six P»ro crosses. In accordance with tho decision arrirod «4 by tha meeting of tho Sheep- * breeders' "Association (South Island), it im been orrnnged to notify all breeders of Border Leicester* in tlio South Island, through the medium of tbe newspapers in the various centres, that their flocks will be impacted, by the inspector appointed by tho Association, iv the early part of next year. Tn an article on farming prospects tbe Aihburton "Mail" states that tho S respects of the farmers for the coming wrest ,-ire now assuming a most encouraging character. It ia safe to say that the area under cereal crops this year much exceeds that of any of tho three previous years, and with ?nriodieal rains till after the 2-Jew c*r of the warm and refreshing chinater of that experienced a f«w <layn ago, the yields -will be above the average. Tliere is every reason to believe also that the harvest will be much earlier this season, but, of oourße, this will depend chiefly on the nature of tha weather. Several paddocks of oato in the Longbeach district are already coming out in ear, and winter sown varieties of wheat cropa are making rigorous progress.
