RATES UNDER NO-LICENSE.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS."
Sir, —In your issue of the 11th inst., under tho heading of ''No-license Rally.'" you report that Mr T. E. Taylor stated, referring to results of noliceiuso in Invercargill, that tho rates since "no-lieenso" came into operation, had been reduced by 3-16tlis of a penny, leading the public of Christchurch to infer that rates in lijvercargill under "No-license" have decreased by that amount. This, however, is not the case, and to show you tho difference, I quote my own case. My rates for eomo years before '"Nolicense" came into force amounted to £•> f)s lid, whereas since "No-license" they have increa.»ed to £7 13s 9d upon the same property, an increase of more than one-third the former amount. I am prepared to submit to you or Mr T. E. Taylor a number of names of ratepayers in Invercargill whose rates have increased at the same, ratio, to verify the above statement. Perhaps Mr T. E. Taylor may be able to enlighten us, how the above increase and his asserted decreaso correspond Yours, etc..
