The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. CHINESE IMMIGRATION. The PREMIER moved the third reading of the Chinese Immigrants Act Amendmeut Bill. Mr HORNSBY moved es an amendment that the third reading be postponed in order that the Government may reconstruct the Bill and impose, a higher poll tax, namely, £200 on every Chines© entering the Dominion. The PREMIER, in opposing tho amendment, referred members to tho statement appearing in the Budget showing that a high tax did not retard the entry of Chinese, but that the most effective course was to impose an eduoational test. The amendment was negatived by 06 votes to 10. Tho Bill was read a third time, and passed. FINAL STAGES. The Co-operative Dairy Companies Bill and the Rangitatu Block Exchange Bill were put tiirou,gh their final stages. The Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act Amendment Bill was rend a third time by 60 votes to 7, and passed. CANTERBURY COLLEGE. The amendments made by the Legislative Council in tho Canterbury College Endowment Bill were agreed to. PUBLIC WORKS IisTIMATBS. The House went into Committee of Supply for consideration of th© Public Works Eetimates. The votes for railways and utilisntion of water power passed unaltered. The Estimates were still under discussion when tho Telegraph Office closed at 2 a.m.
