MR C. E. CALCUTT.

By the death of Mr C. E. Colcutt, which occurred yeeterday morning, a prominent figure in. Canterbury commercial oircles has been removed. The deoeaeed gentleman joined tho Christohurch branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., as a junior in the stock department, during the time of Mr John Oooke's management, and at the time of his death was assistant manager and chief salesman. With tho exception of a brief period, when he was in business with the presont manager of the Company (Mr E. G. Staveley), he has been, with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company for about 25 years. The lafe Mr Cnlcutt was looked upon as an exceptionally capable officer, and thiough his death the company have sustained a severe loss. He was a momber of tho Canterbury Jockey Club, Christchurch Racing Club, Ricairton Liceiming Committee, and Canterbury Club; and was treasurer of the Sheep Owners' Union. Tho deceased gentleman was a prominent member of the Lancaster Park Cricket Club, and at the time of his death occupied the position of President of the Riccarton Cricket Club. The late Mr Calcutt was tho son of M!r Thomas Calcutt, of the well-known Goodwood estate. Otago, who was subsequently appointed a Government valuer. He was 40 years of ago at the time of his death, and leaves a widow and two daughters. Mr E. G. Staveley received a large number oP telegrams from various parts of New Zealand, sympathising with Mrs Calcutt and the company in their sad loss. The funeral will take place «t 2.30 p.m. to-day.

Mr John L. Jopp, proprietor of the Royal Oak Hotel at Arrowtown. died suddenly of heart disease on Wednesday evening. Hβ was well known and highly esteemed throughout Otago and Southland. Prior to taking the hotel over twenty years ago, Mr Jopp was engaged in the carrying business on the road between Dnnedin and the Goldfields. He leaves a widow, six sons and two daughters to mourn their loss. Of the sons two (both married) aro well known in tho Mataura district (saye tho "Ensign.")—Mr John Jopp, now of Chrirtchurch, and Mr Robert Jopp, of Riversdale.
