The f*rry uteamer Jlararo*. from Wellington, (litl not arrive unti! 5.J5 p.m. yestervlay, the v»»mI being detained in Wellington ■until S *.m. owing to v, breakdown in the steering g»ftr. It wai found on Monday a(----1«moon th*t ono of tlie valves of the hydraulic steering gear was out of order, and that a n«» casting would havo to be mad« before repairs could be effected. A strong louth-eaat gale v;ae blowing in Wellington. and Captain Manning did not deem it prudent to attempt to take the vessel out in the dark against the gale, with only the haad. steering gear to work the ship. Th« Mararoa, therefore, lemained alongside the wharf until 4.45 a.m. yeeferday, when the. zailed for Iyyttelton. Pine weather waa experienced on the run down, and the vessel was steered with complete succbbh by the hand gear, worked by the double wheel right *tt. The vessel was berthed shortly before 6.80 p.m.. and after landing passengers and mails, and taking on the northward bound contingent, she sailed or. her leturn to Wellington. It is expected that repairs to the hydraulic atoering gear will lie completed at Wellington to-day.
