United Press Association—By Electria Telegraph—Copyright. SEIZED BY A SHARK. SYDNEY, October 14. A man named Nolan was surf bathing on the Newcastlo beach when he was seized by a shark. Ho had his left arm mangled. Another swimmer rescued' Nolan, who became unconscious before he reached the shore.
ENGINEER'S ATTEMPTED .SUICIDE. MELBOURNE, October 14. The cruiser Psycho, bound from Sydney to Adelaide, experienced a rough passage. Sho put into Portland to repair a condenser. One of tho viißineers fell down in the engine room and injured his head severely. During the delirium which follower!, he cut his throat from ear to ear. Tbe wound was not fatal, and tho patient is on a fair way to recovery. WRECK OF THE ARGOT. ADELAIDE, October 14. Tho Argot is a total wreck. The bottom is apparently knocked out of her. She lies within 100 yards of thn shore, and the crew landed without difficulty. The captain states ho thought be was eight miles off land when the vessel struck. RAILWAY CONVEYANCE OF MAIIvS. (Received October 14th, 11.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 14. Hitherto tbe Comauonwealth postal administration has paid the various railway administrations £225.000 per annum for the conveyance ef mails. The Oomriiissinners now demand an increase of £145,000, and tho Postal Pepsrtmeiit refuse to pay it. A conference cpens to-morrow to «ndeavour to adjust the matter.
