SUPREME COURT TRIALS.
(press association telegram.) . . TIMARU, September 10. The sitting of the Supreme Court opened here thi3 morning before Mr Justice Chapman, who congratulated the district on its freedom from crime of a serious nature. There are only throe criminal cases, one of these being agunst the late town clerk at Waimate, who is charged on several counts witn having dealt fraudulently with certain money entrusted to his care. William Colernan, alias Suttoa waa found guilty of uttering a valued less cheque for £14. He wee shown to have a bwd roeord, though only twentysix years old, and wae sentenced to throe years' hard labour, and to be dealt with thereafter as aa. habitual criminal. Two men wot© charged with robbing « drunken man. One pleaded fuilty and the other was acquitted, ho former was admitted to probation for two years.
