THE VOLUNTEERS.
Inspector-General Davies. attended by Colonel Hawkins and Lieutenant ' Chcsney, visited Kaiapoi on Thursday evening, and inspected the Rifle Volunteers and Cadets in the Drill Hall. Tho former mustered forty-six, under Captain J_. K. Ponprill md Lieut. Feathoistone. Tho drill was in extended oidor, under the officers and non-commissioned officers. Captain Papprill informed tho company that tbo result of the inspection was regarded as satisfactory. Tho Military Cadets, thirty-five on parade under Lieutenant H. Oram and Lieutenant Thwaites, were afterwards put through firing and skirmishing exercises. Lieutenant Oram subsequently announced that the Inspector-General had admired tho keenness and drill ot the Cadets. The Engineers under Captain Jones nnd Lieutenants Andrews, Midgley, Kiddy, and Bradley, paraded for inspection by the Inspector-General, Colonel Davies,. Inst evening. The men were put through drill and the field engineering section constructed a barrel raft and traced out fortifications. The signallers gave an exhibition of signalling with Begbie lamps, and the electrical section erected telephone and field telegraphs and exploded a land mine.
