A. PLEA OF GUILTY
David Baird, tho young man whose evidenco at the opening of an inquest on the body of an illegitimate clif. at the Morgue on August sth differci materially from hifl subsequent statements at"tho Magistrate's Court, when the enquiry was resumed, appeared Before Mr *V. G. Day, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, on a charge of committing perjury. Chief Detective Chrystal prosecuted, and Mr Anthony defended. Mr H. W. Bishop," District Coroner, said that on the sth inst. ho opened an enquiry into tho death of nn .illegitimate child, the further hearing of which was adjourned until August 26th. Tho aoensed was duly swornat the Morgue, and gave evidence, which witness took down in writing, winch ho now produced. At the further hearing on August _6th, tho accuseu proffered to give evidence through his solicitor (Mr Anthony), and on his previous oath gave further evidence, which was taken down in writing, ana wh.ich he now produced. He produced the whole of the depositions taken by him at tho inquest. Constablo Flowellyn said he administered the oath to Baird nt the Morgue on August sth. Tho mother of tno cnild gave evidence that accused was the father of her child. The accused pleaded guilty, and was commEtted to tho Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed.
