(BPF.CIAI. TO "THE PRESS.") GI.SBORXE, August 29. The Whakatane correspondent of the "Poverty Bay Herald" states that an officer of the Matatua Maori Council was sent to Maungapohatu to collect the dog tax. On his arrival there the "prophet" Rua came out of his whare with an axe, and threatened to kill him if he did not at once leave the* place with his dog collars. Tho officer's name w?s Wharej _>uri Te Aino. Kokokuri was ako threatened with a gun for bringing away the body of a girl who had died.
