It ie Mr Haldaue's intention to further reduce the Woolwich arsenal staff by 3000 men, making 8000 men the minimum peace strength, whereas formerly there were 15,000 men employed. The proposal has caused indignation at Woolwich. The engineers demanded a strike, which their leaders overruled. The workmen ere now appealing to the Labour Members of Parliament.

The discharges at Woolwich havo placed the Labour members in rather am awkward position. It is part of their platform that thero should be a substantial reduction in military and naval expenditure, and in takimg the part of»the discharged men against the Government they are going directly agaiinst their own policy.
