A man had been employed burning rubbish, and in the night «a terrific gale n f wind sprang up, which fanned into flame tho smouldering embers. Twc stacks of eaten sheaves wero burned to the ground. Tlio settlers of the district worked with a will, cutting down the burning trees, and tryino; to prevent the flame* from spread ing. but in face of tho nwful wind th«t W3.i raging, their efforts seemed almost useless, until in tho morning a heavy downpour of rain came to their assist ance.
