A fire occurred at Plymouth workhouse, tho main block being gutted. Two hundred and fifty inmates were rescued, including many who are olfl aud feeble. BOWLING. The New Zealand bowlere beat the Tit wood Club, Glasgow, by three pointe. LAWN TENNIS. In the tennis championship's finals of the doubles, Brookes and Wilding defeated Wright and Behr, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. In the ladies' singles, Miss May Sutton beat Mrs Chambers (formerly Miss K. Douglas), 6-1, 6-4. THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE. July 6. The Duke of Devonshire's health shows a decided improvement. AN INSULTED ARMY. BERLIN, July 5. The editor of tho Socialist newspaper "Volksstemme" has been sentenced to a month's imprisonment at Mannheim for publishing an insulting article regarding the German troops in South-West Africa. A MILLIONAIRE IN TROUBLE. VENICE, July 5. Customs officers overhauled Mr Pierpont Morgan's yacht, believing he had purchased part of the Strozzi art collection in Florence and was endeavouriit t; to clandestinely remove it. The officers found nothing. Mr Morgan vows that he will boycott Italy in future. COAL MINERS' HOURS. PARIS, July 6. The Chamber of Deputies, by 427 votes to 125, passed M. Basley's Bill, making eight maximum day's work in mines. SOUTH AFRICAN MEAT. CAPETOWN, July 6. The Assembly has reed a second time the Meat Bill, which ia designed to promote the consumption of South African meat and prevent the cold storage companies from throttling competition.
