OBITUARY.
influential Maori chief died at tho Lriweri Pa, Okaiawa. on Sunday, ill the person of Njratai, who in his earlier days was one of tho leading men of the groat fighting chief Titokowaru. Ngatai, who is reported to have been over 90 years old, was in the To Ngiitti-o-to IManu engagement, in which Major yon Temp.sky was killed. N'gatai had considerable mana with the South Taranaki natives, and a tangi on a large scale is being held. At the Afcir. irton County Council mooting yest-rnlay, after referring to tho death of ■Sir John Hail, the chairman (Mr C. J. Harper) , eaid he had abo to record the death of Mr John Holmes, who had been a most useful aivl valuable member of the Council. Mr Harper regretted that owing to the Council meeting ho was unable to attend the iuiural, which took place a. Methvou iiuit day. Ho moved—"That this Council regrets tho death of the late Mr John Holmes, who for many years was n useful member of this Council, and that a letter of condolence 'be forwarded to his widow."' In seconding the motion. Mr John Lambio said he oouli heartily endorse what hod been said with reference to the late Mr Holmes. The motion was carried in silence, members standing.
