THE ASSOCIATION GAME.
CANTERBURY SHIELD COMPETITION. Celtic met Sydenham in t-ho second round of tho Canterbury .Shield Competition at trie South l'iirk on Saturday. The ground was in good condition, with little or no wind. Celtic won the toss and defended the southern goal. Sydenham kicked off, and it was at once seen thot if Sydenham wero much the lighter team of tho two, tliey wcro also considerably fa.ster. Smallboncs, tho ex-Otago representative-, was soon called upon to show his quality, several shots from tho Sydenham forwards being cleared in good style, but at la.st a faulty clearance, from a hot shot by W. Ward enabled Jones to register the first goal tor Sydenham. I'lay was now very fait, and at times almost briliiant, but tho defence on either sido wsis very sound, atid halftimo found tho score unaltered. On tho turn round Celtic kicked off, and canio down witii a rush, but Hill iniskickwl. and tho attack broke up. Svdenluim .again attacked, and finally, from a break-away, W. Ward scored again for Sydenham. Celtic came, strongly, and from a miskick by a hack, almost scored, Ku.--.sell clearing in an olmo.it impossible position. llcNish played a good gnino at fullback for Celtic, but Cornish, «fc centrofonvard, was so shadowed by Dowker at centre-half that ho quito failed to get in any of his characteristic rushes, and tho Celtic forwards rarely got going. Play siowed up considerably in tho'closing stages of tho ( . game, and time found tho score— Sydenham 2 goals, Celtic nil. Mr Radcliff was referee.
