♦ A STATEMENT FROM AUCKLAND. (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, June 7. Auckland being the centre of the kauri timber milling industry of the colony, tho telegrapned report giving statements and rigiircs quoted by Christchurch, merchants as to the price rri kauri timber in the &out_ern cuy ha 3 considerable local interest. Witii a view to securing some particulars on the price of kauri as charged locally, and what it ought to be with cost of freight and other charges added»whon landed at, Christchurch, as well as in Australia, a "Herald" reporter waited on ono of tho most prominent sawmillers and obtained from him a detailed statement. He quoted the prices of the various classes of timber landed at Christchurch and Melbourne, and concluded, "It is obvious from tho figures tliat the statement that firstclass kauri timber can be purchased in Melbourne and landed in Christchurch cheaper than it can be obtained in New Zealand is entirely erroneous.''
